Trailer Wiring Connectors
Most of the wiring connector has 4 to 7 posts or blades, based upon how it has been equipped, to control brake functions and brake lighting. Four wire flat plugs are used in small trailers to control the taillights, turn signals, and brake lights. Five, six and 7 wires are used in larger trailers to control auxiliary power, backup lights, and electric trailer brake control.
The most popular Trailer wire connectors used in the Recreation vehicles are listed below:
4-Way Flat Bonded Wiring Connectors:
This 4- way flat bonded wiring are bonded with wires and constructed with rubber molds. This kind of trailer wiring connectors are mostly used in vehicles with 2-wire systems. It includes a trailer-end plug, with 20’ bonded wire. The flat bonded wiring connectors intertwines into the trailer wiring, to provide a connection to the vehicle socket. The output of the 4-way flat wiring connectors are connected to the tail lights, brake lights and turn signals. Since it has been constructed with molded rubber, these connectors last longer. It structures 20’ of color-coded wire for making the installation easier.
4-Way Flat Wiring Connectors:
4-way flat wiring connectors uses banded wired and rubber molded construction. It consists of 12’ bonded wire and are packaged with necessary installation hardware. These are mostly used with recreation vehicles with 2-wire systems. The connectors are plugged into the existing OEM socket, to add a 4-way flat and retains the use of OEM 7-way. This kind of plug and play design, eliminates the need of cutting or splicing. A dust cover is also provided to keep the connector clean. A slit cover is provided, which well protects the wire.
5-Way Flat Wiring Connectors:
This 5-way flat connector are designed, in a such a way that it can supply power for turn signals, tail lights, brake lights, reverse lights and as well can be used as a ground connection. These connectors can be easily spliced into the recreation vehicles as it molded with rubber which makes it durable. Both a vehicle-end, and trailer-end connectors have been included. This serves as a loop for useful extension harness. They are mainly used on boat trailers, with surge brakes.
7-Way Round RV Blade Wiring Connector:
In the 7-way round blade wiring connectors, each colored wire performs a unique operation.
· White – Ground wire
· Blue – Electric brakes
· Brown – Tail Running lights
· Black – Battery
· Red – LH Stop & Turn
· Green – RH Stop & Turn
· Yellow - Auxiliary
Whereas, the 7-pin trailer style performs the following functions
- White – Ground
- Black – Marker and Clearance
- Yellow – Left Turn
- Red – Stop
- Green – Right Turn
- Brown - 3 Bar Marker and Tail
- Blue – Auxiliary
An adaptor is required for better use of a two taillight trailer. This is used if the towing vehicle has separate brake and rear turn signals. You can also add brake lights to the trailer, and make use of the 6 or 7 pin connector to run the brake light wire via the auxiliary circuit.
Tail Light Wiring Kit:
The Tail light wiring kit is designed for both the 2-wire system, and 3- wire system. In 2-wire system, the stop and turn signal lightings uses the same bulb. Though few vehicles uses a combination for turn and stop by installing dual filament. It uses a simple 4 way flat connector, to power up the lights. In 3- wire system, the Tow vehicles has amber turn signals installed separately. Separate bulbs are provided for stop, and turn signals. A taillight convertor is used to power up the lights.
Towed Vehicle Wiring Kit:
In order to achieve a better performance in a Towing vehicle, you need to ensure that it is properly wire. The towed vehicle’s signal lights are designed in such a way that it acts accordingly with the brake, and turn signal lights on the Tow vehicle. You can achieve this with the following ways:
- Removable tail light kit which bypasses the towed car’s electrical system. It can be mounted easily and can be removed for occasional towing.
- Bulb and socket kit which bypasses the towed car’s electrical system which gives a permanent solution for frequent towing.
- Hardwire diode kit are spliced into towed car’s wiring. This is also suitable for frequent towing.
- Custom-fit, plug-in wiring harness are plugged into towed car’s wiring. This is also suitable for frequent towing.
Trailer Light Kit:
A wide variety of safety lights are provided for functional requirements as well. These functional trailer lights are of great importance for all type of towing vehicles, including flatbed trailers, car trailer or horse trailer. Trailer light kits are easy to be installed. The testing tools and wire kits make the installation much easier.
